We recently cleaned a very large parking garage, two buildings with a total of seven levels. They just needed a good rinse since the buildings were fairly new and had very few oil stains. But the wind had blown in a lot of loose dirt.
And when you use pressure washers with this much dirt, you can spend as much time pushing the sludge buildup as you do washing.
So this was a perfect job for a fire hose. The greater volume of water can carry the dirt away without building up sludge.

We used blowers and brooms to collect as much loose dirt as we could before we started washing. Then we collected the rest of the dirt so it didn’t go down the drains and cause a massive clog. We filled two of these pallet-size totes with dirt.
We have a nozzle we put on the end of the hose to control the pressure. Without the nozzle, the hose has more pressure than one man can handle. And it takes some manpower to drag the hose around. A few hundred feet of hose with water gets pretty heavy.
Sometimes you need a few guys on squeegees to make sure all that water runs where you want.
Certain spots still need pressure washers. You get a much more concentrated clean with a pressure washer and we wanted to make sure the lines were clean enough to be restriped.
A fire hose isn’t the always the best choice for cleaning parking garages. But since we don’t have to charge for the meters, hoses, and permits because we use them on other jobs, it can be a cost effective option.
