A few weeks ago, we pulled our snow plow trucks out to get ready for the season’s first snow plowing for 2011. The sun was shining brightly so we lined them all up to get a good picture.

The one on the right – partially hidden in this cropped picture – has a salt spreader. It’s also 15 years old with only 60,000 miles on it! Just click the picture to enlarge it.

Our snow plow trucks are usually scattered all over the city so it’s rare that they’re all in one place long enough to get a good picture. You’ll notice our trucks aren’t new. One of the advantages of taking care of them is they last a long time.

I always wonder about companies that have all shiny new equipment. Anyone with the most basic financial skills can run the numbers and see that taking care of your equipment and running them for years is far more cost-effective than buying new all the time. Even huge corporations that supposedly “need tax write-offs” can run the numbers.

But maybe they need to impress people with the amount of money they throw away – you know, like $200 lunches. We’ve found that most of our clients are business people who aren’t impressed by that stuff. Probably because they’re usually the business manager or owner who has to justify all the expenses at the end of the year.
