We just started our 19th annual boat washing at Chatfield Marina southwest of Denver.
Every year we get a special permit from the Colorado State Parks Department. And it has to be approved by the Army Corps of Engineers who are in charge of the dam and reservoir.
The reservoir was built in 1975 for flood control but has become one of Denver’s major recreation areas. It’s a different world – just outside of metro Denver. Besides boating and swimming, there is camping, horse back riding, hiking, wildlife, and all the other things you find in the wilderness.
We’re the only company with an approved procedure for boat washing right at the marina.
We wash the boats at the marina next to the boat ramp. Since we’re washing boats next to the reservoir, we have to make sure everything we do is environmentally safe.
And when you work with as many government agencies as we do, you know they make sure you have the correct insurance – commercial auto, liability and workers comp.
When I checked in with the head park ranger, I told him we were having a much harder time getting the boats clean this year. He told me they didn’t have very strong water flows since the snow pack was low.
So there is a lot more dirt in the reservoir than we’ve seen in the past. And it was just last year they finished the work in the Waterton Canyon reservoir. Any extra dirt they kicked loose up there would flow down stream into Chatfield reservoir.
So we had to change our boat washing schedule for every one and a half hours instead of every hour. And the extra time means the price had to go up as well. But this is the first price increase we’ve had since 2005.
