Water Recovery Is Not Optional
We got a call for a sidewalk pressure washing job that needed water recovery.
The call came from a small maintenance contractor that does a lot of work for a large property management company. When I asked them about the gutters and any storm sewers in the area, they didn’t understand why I was asking.
It was clear they weren’t aware of the regulations about water recovery from pressure washing operations. As I explained about the potential fines for letting water get to the storm sewer, they got pretty quiet. It turned out, they do some pressure washing themselves – and have probably let the water go down the gutter in the past.
I told them all the information about current water recovery regulations was on our website so they could show the property managers why it would cost more to do the job the correct way. We never heard back from them.
I imagine they read the regulations on our website and realized I was telling the truth. Maybe they called someone else and got a lower bid. There are still companies out there that will do any job they can and don’t worry about recovering the water.
But those companies are gambling with their clients money and reputations, as well as their own. Unfortunately, many small pressure washing businesses are run out of someone’s house and they don’t keep up with all the laws and regulations. There’s nothing wrong with running a small business out of your house – as long as you don’t do things that can cause problems for your clients.
