The City of Fort Collins is still having problems with some pressure washing companies not recovering their waste water.

The city has previously sent letters and flyers to all the pressure washing companies that do work there – and the businesses that hire them. But they continue to have problems with some companies not following the regulations.

So the City of Fort Collins sent another letter ( Ft Collins powerwashing letter 2013 ) to us and all other pressure washing companies a few weeks ago with an update to their municipal code. They also included the Colorado state regulations.

When we received the letter, I followed up and spoke with Susan Strong, the Environmental Regulatory Specialist for Fort Collins. She assured me most of the pressure washing businesses that work there do things the right way.

But since they have a lot of waterways and wetlands around the city, they do a lot of outreach with the local residents. Its important for everyone to know how to protect our water. And since most of the residents of Fort Collins know how important it is to keep waste water from the storm sewers, they don’t hesitate to make a call when they see someone letting the water run down the gutters.

So the city sent this letter as a reminder for those power washing companies who aren’t as conscientious about water recovery as they should be.

For us, it was just a reminder since we’ve been doing water recovery for years. EPA and water recovery regulations are constantly changing and we try to stay ahead of the game.

In February, 2010, the EPA published the Clean Water Action Plan containing new stormwater regulations. One part of the new plan is to “strengthen oversight of the states”.

This raised the bar for municipalities to control what gets into the storm sewer and runs into the rivers. If the downstream water quality isn’t controlled, the city can be fined by the EPA.

It causes problems for everyone when the regulations are ignored by pressure washing companies that let their waste water run down the gutters and into the storm sewers. And these amateur pressure washing companies put a black mark on the entire industry.
