We got a call about car washing for an auto dealer who had used our services before.

They switched to a cheaper company a few weeks ago – and quickly found out they got what they were paying for.

There are some things the little guys just can’t do. And this isn’t a slam on the little car washing companies. Our company was started by a guy working out of his house – most companies are.

Apple and Hewlett-Packard were started in a garage, too. But companies like ours – with 6 trucks and 25 employees – are at a different level than a guy with one truck.

We have full insurance coverage including Workers Compensation. Most little guys like this one don’t. Many of them try to pretend their employees are independent contractors so they don’t need it.

We guarantee our work and back it up. If one of our crews has an off day and does a poor job, we go back for free. We know the few hundred dollars it costs will come back in the long run.

And we take care of any damage on the lot, too. When you wash more than 250,000 cars in a year, their will be one or two mistakes.

And when the weather gets bad and we need to get all of our clients cars washed on the good days, we usually have enough extra trucks to get caught up. A guy with one truck will only be able to do one days work – so the rest of his customers have dirty cars for the weekend.

But this former client wanted us to match the cheaper guy’s rates to get their business back. Which wouldn’t be fair to our other car washing clients who pay our regular rates.

Discounting your rates to get unprofitable business is a quick way to go out of business – no matter what kind of business you’re in. Shouldn’t all our stability and guarantees be worth $20 0r $30 per week?

The car washing clients we’ve had for 10+ years think so.
