The Denver Post has sponsored the Cheyenne Frontier Days Train from Denver, CO to Cheyenne, WY every year for many years.  For more than 10 years, Wash On Wheels has been the company the Denver Post and all the patrons of the train relied on to clean 750 windows inside and out to provide bug-juice-free views of the countryside during the trip.

The Denver Newspaper Agency has relied on us for so long because the company they hired before us didn’t show up in time to get the whole train done.  The train is only available for one day as it comes into Denver during the early morning to be stocked, washed and prepped the day before departure.  Because there are so many windows to wash, it takes 6 people 7-8 hours to get it done.

Some of the train cars have two levels inside.  On these cars, usually 5-7 of them, there are windows on a dome on top of the car.  In order to clean these windows, one of our crew members has to use a specially fitted extension ladder to wash the windows on the sides of the dome.  Then he walks the roof of each dome to clean the windows at each end.  The windows at each end of the dome take a lot of extra time because they usually have to be scraped with a razor blade to remove the heavy bug splatters before washing.

Many of the inside windows have curtains or blinds that have to be moved before cleaning and then replaced.  The train is shut down during this process and since it’s done in the heart of summer, the temperatures inside the cars can soar to well over 100 degrees. That’s why we always start at 4am!

It’s all the special conditions and the short time-frame for washing the windows on the train that makes this such a unique job. And our ability to adapt to the conditions and get it done every year is why the Denver Newspaper Agency has kept us on the job and happily worked with us each year.  They even gave us an endorsement letter.
