The graffiti removal program through Pueblo’s Community Service removed 3000 more tags in 2013 than in 2012.

While most of the graffiti was in secluded areas like alleys, under bridges, and along trails, more than 2300 of the tags were in downtown Pueblo. Some of the tags seemed to be gang related but many appeared to be harmless scribbling.

While there is no way to know exactly why there were so many more tags, Tawni Nolting, a member of the graffiti removal program, believes some of the teenagers are simply bored.

Whether the tagging appears harmless or not, the costs involved in removing it are substantial. The cost of the material for graffiti removal is expensive and it takes a lot of time and equipment to get to the job, no matter how large or small it is.

The City of Pueblo contributes $30,000 to the graffiti removal service. Donations from citizens and grants from various agencies make up the difference.

And that money could be put to a lot more productive uses. Imagine if it could be spent on gyms, community centers, playgrounds, etc. Or how about funding some of the programs cut by schools over the last few years?

Their are no easy solutions to the problem. Perhaps if people are made aware of the costs involved and the opportunities lost they might change their attitude. It may take some time but its worth keeping up the fight.
